Abstract

Neapolitan visual culture is marked by a representational fracture, the near-total inconsistency of the bourgeois narrative and, in parallel, the extraordinary vitality of popular representation. Within this asymmetry, rooted in historiographical evidence, the Neapolitan bourgeoisie has never exercised a hegemonic role in the production of signs. Lacking political continuity, a shared urban project, and an imaginary capable of sedimenting over time, the middle class has not generated recognizable lifestyles nor its own iconography. The result is a representational void that spans centuries, the bourgeoisie exists sociologically, but without any real representational force.

  • Fausto Cianciullo, Naples Academy of Fine Arts

Fausto Cianciullo is a PhD candidate in Film and Media Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His research focuses on the Neapolitan cinematic imagery, explored through visual recursion, narrative topics, and iconographic elements spanning decades of representation. In his theoretical work, he considers cinema as a complex cultural object: a layered system in which archetypes never remain frozen, but are transformed in relation to the historical and social contexts that generate and recirculate them. His filmmaking practice is geared toward exploring the intersections between memory, territory, and representation, with particular attention to the ways in which cinema constructs Naples as a symbolic and narrative space.
