OPEN CALL FOR ESSAYS – SECTION: ARTICLES

Research contributions on cinema, media, and visual cultures

The Articles section of BLACKOUT. Cinema and Other Visions welcomes original scholarly contributions dedicated to cinema, audiovisual media, and visual cultures, without the thematic constraints associated with the monographic dossiers featured in the Focus On section. The Call for Essays for this section is permanent and always open. Authors may submit their work at any time of year, proposing independent research that contributes to scholarly discourse within the journal’s areas of interest.

The Articles section is conceived as a space for dialogue among the diverse theoretical, methodological, and critical perspectives that shape film and media studies. It highlights both broad reflections and specific analyses of works, filmmakers, genres, cultural phenomena, production practices, and modes of reception. In this context, the journal particularly values contributions that link the analysis of texts and audiovisual forms to the historical, social, political, economic, and technological contexts in which they are created and circulate.

The section’s scope encompasses, among other topics: film history and theory; film aesthetics and language; national and transnational cinemas; genres and forms of audiovisual storytelling; documentary and experimental film practices; television and seriality; digital platforms; video games; comics; photography; popular music; music videos; digital cultures; and the multifaceted relationships between media and society. Furthermore, the Articles section welcomes research on transformations within the audiovisual industry; processes of production, distribution, and consumption; the politics of representation; archives and memory; issues of identity; and the intersections between cinema, media, and other artistic forms.

Submissions may include case studies grounded in a sound critical and bibliographic framework, as well as contributions of a theoretical, historical, methodological, or empirical nature. Regardless of the approach adopted, articles must present a clearly defined research subject, an original argument, a coherent methodology, and an up-to-date engagement with relevant scholarly literature. Contributions must be original and not simultaneously under consideration by other journals.

Manuscripts submitted for the Articles section should range between 15.000 and 20.000 characters (including spaces and footnotes) and must adhere to the editorial guidelines available on the journal’s website.

All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers remain mutually anonymous. Publication is contingent upon a positive scientific evaluation and the manuscript’s compliance with BLACKOUT’s scientific and editorial requirements. Submissions must be made via the journal’s editorial platform, following the instructions provided in the section dedicated to submissions.
